As the country celebrates 53 years’ anniversary, Time Shield Events in partnership with MTN Botswana will host the 3rd Annual MTN Botswana Independence Marathon on the 21 of September 2019 at the University of Botswana Stadium.
The MTN Botswana Independence Marathon provides an easily accessible platform for likeminded people of all running abilities, fitness levels and varying goals to get together and run as a celebration of the country’s independence whilst also keeping fit.
The marathon encourages participation and attendance by all citizens and residence of Botswana but not excluding corporate government and non-governmental organizations. This is a National event that is celebrating a healthy and productive nation.
As Botswana celebrates its Golden Jubilee as an independent country and its main City, the city of Gaborone is turning 30 years as well, moreover the Lucara Diamond Company has in this year discovered the biggest diamond (Lesedi larona) in Botswana’s Diamond history. A fusion of these 3 historical moments could not be left unmarked, as they represent significant milestones in the History of Botswana.
Time Shield Events in partnership with Botswana Athletics Association, powered by Lucara Diamond Corp hosted the first Botswana Independence Half Marathon titled Lucara Bot50 Independence Half Marathon on the 24th September 2016, targeting residents of Botswana.
In its 2nd year, the Botswana Independence Marathon provided yet another easily accessible platform for likeminded people of all running abilities, fitness levels and varying goals to get together and pursue a healthy lifestyle. The event was hosted in Gaborone at the University of Botswana Stadium on the 23rd September 2017. The race initially comprised of 4 categories being: 42km, 21km, 10km and a 5km FunRun, however the 42km category as later on removed from the schedule based on technical reason as advised by the Botswana Athletics Association.
The 2017 Race was a success as it was organized and delivered without a title sponsor thus maintaining its original race name being Botswana Independence Marathon. However, the race managed to attract participation of over 3000 runners which was a mix of both local and international runners.
Notwithstanding the challenges of running solo without a title sponsor, Time Shield Events managed to pull this race with the little help that we could get from various institutions and individuals. We worked hard to broaden our participation in local and international running events thus deepening relationships and entrenching our brand purpose as an Icon of a Healthy Lifestyle. We were part of the Lady Khama Run21, Lady Khama Family Fun Day, Jwaneng Bush Walk, Wonder Park Race (Pretoria, SA), PPC King of the Hill Challenge, Diacore Marathon just to mention but a few.
